denbutsu is an American English teacher living in Yokohama, Japan. The Atheist Den is his humble effort to promote atheism, skepticism, secular humanitarianism, reason and science (from a layperson’s perspective), or generally speaking the intellectual and societal freedom and enjoyment of life without any religions or gods. The name “denbutsu” combines “Denver”, since he’s from Colorado, and “daibutsu” (The Great Buddha), since it’s one of the most recognizable cultural icons near the part of Japan where he lives. The avatar picture in no way signifies any Buddhist beliefs, but only an appreciation for, and affinity with, Japanese culture, in which most people have the good sense to take a markedly secular approach to their religious cultural traditions. denbutsu also digs the Grateful Dead, spicy food, Denver sports teams, and good beer.
